Prescribed fire increases the number of ground?nesting bee nests in tallgrass prairie remnants

چکیده

Prescribed burning is a common management technique in tallgrass prairie remnants, but there have been few empirical studies that directly examine impacts on the nesting preferences and habitat of ground-nesting bees. We used emergence traps remnant prairies western Minnesota, USA to determine whether bees prefer nest burned or unburned prairies. estimated total number nests made by actively patches assessing each specimen for wing mandible wear, sex, sociality. also measured characteristics may influence bee including bare ground, thatch depth, vegetative cover, floral community. found more than patches, no differences effective species community composition. Burned had higher amounts percent ground thinner layer, abundance, flowering plant richness, flowers Our results suggest highlight opportunities future research better understand ecology response management.

Tallgrass Prairie: Remnants and Relicts

The tallgrass prairie once was continuous throughout the eastern Great Plains. Now, scattered remnants remain. The distribution of some of the most interesting and socially valuable remnants occur along the base of the Rocky Mountains as relicts from a past era. When the species composition of these Colorado grasslands is compared with that of the eastern tallgrass prairie by an index of simila...

Fire Regimes and Avian Responses in the Central Tallgrass Prairie

Grasslands make up the largest vegetative province in North America, and one that has been signifi cantly altered over the past two centuries. The tallgrass prairie of the eastern Great Plains and Midwest has declined to a greater extent than any other ecosystem, primarily due to plowing for cereal grain production. Grassland bird populations have declined at a greater rate and over a wider are...

Fire history of a prairie/forest boundary: more than 250 years of frequent fire in a North American tallgrass prairie

Results: Fires were recorded in 46.6% of the years between 1729 and 2005. In 41 cross-sections at one site, the mean fire interval between 1759 and 2003 was 2.59 years, with fire interval decreasing from a mean fire interval of 3.76 years in the early part of the record to 2.13 years in modern times. No extended periods without fire were recorded in the study area. Drought conditions had no sig...

The ecological significance of tallgrass prairie arthropods.

Tallgrass prairie (TGP) arthropods are diverse and abundant, yet they remain poorly documented and there is still much to be learned regarding their ecological roles. Fire and grazing interact in complex ways in TGP, resulting in a shifting mosaic of resource quantity and quality for primary consumers. Accordingly, the impacts of arthropod herbivores and detritivores are expected to vary spatia...

Perceptions of Landowners Concerning Conservation, Grazing, Fire, and Eastern Redcedar Management in Tallgrass Prairie

Successful prairie restoration will depend in part on convincing private landowners with agricultural and recreational use goals to implement appropriate rangeland management practices, such as prescribed burning and cattle grazing, to control invasive species and encroachment of woody plants. However, landowners have been slow to adopt appropriate practices in the US Midwest. The purpose of th...
